SMS and IM lingo enters kids’ essays
It seems the new-gen kids have devised an altogether new vocabulary for themselves…which is short simple and easy for them…yes, you guessed it write we are talking about the IM lingo or the most latest SMS lingo. Off lately, this kind of a language taken over their academics as well. According to middle school teacher Julia Austin, the newest errors that her pupils are making while writing English together with the classics ones are using words like “b4 for before”, “gotta for got to”, 2 for to” and many like these.
The internet and SMS lingo has finally started affecting the academics of kids. Reason being the fact that, a major portion of a kid’s time, after school is spent either on the IM to get in touch with his/her friends or in sending some quick SMSes over the cell phone.
Middle school teachers see this trend as a troubling one, particularly when concerned with junior and middle school. The techno tend is taking a toll on the language skills of these kids.
At the same time there are liberal educators like David Warlick, who take pride in this achievement of young kids the achievement of inventing a new language, which is ideal for communicating in the high tech world.
It is right that kids will understand the right way as they grow but still we must teach them that the lingo that they are using is OK only till making friends, planning parties and flirting around. And when it comes to a serious career, the classic styles of writing are the only tools that can fetch them some fortune.
