You can now let your heart beat long after your death. No, this is no tale-tell, but can happen in real life by literally preserving one’s heart in a box in isolation.
Called the Organ Care System, the ‘heart in a box’ machine is recently used by doctors in Pittsburgh to successfully keep hearts beating for hours on their own, after they were removed from cadavers!
This amazing, but bizarre machine is made by TransMedics Inc., of Andover, Mass.
To make sure that the hearts transplanted out of the box really work the way those preserved by current methods do, the researchers will be testing the machine further at five transplant centers in the U.S.
Though the idea may appear “yuckiest” to you, it is surely a bold and fascinating advance in an effort to save the lives of people with failing hearts.
And once the machine is successful in its work, hearts could easily be moved anywhere in the country to help someone elsewhere who needs one, keeping away worries about — how long the process is taking.
